Beale Street Bonanza Arrives September 10th

The East Cut Community Benefit District hosts the first ever Beale Street Bonanza on Sunday, September 10th in the new midblock park adjacent to 375 Beale (between LUMINA and the Bay Area Metro Center). The Bonanza will celebrate the neighborhood’s collection of public open spaces with an interactive walking workshop kicking off at 9:30am followed by a free community Block Party beginning at 11:00am to support The East Cut’s new neighborhood work experience program to fight homelessness—Downtown Streets Team.

9:30am – 11:30am Walkabout Survey (optional)
Meet at Ada’s Cafe (375 Beale St, San Francisco, CA) where our friends there will open on Sunday especially for us and will be serving up $1 drip coffees to survey takers. Then, the facilitated Walkabout Survey begins! You’ll have the chance to get out in the streets with us to share your experiences and help generate ideas for ground floor and sidewalk activation projects. The Walkabout Survey concludes at 11:30am and will join the Block Party. All walkabout survey attendees will receive a complimentary coffee, tea, or brunch cocktail at the block party to follow the walk.

Walkabout attendees will have the option to choose from several routes depending on areas of interest – though exact distance will vary, each route will be approximately 1 mile in length. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes you can easily walk in. If you have mobility restrictions but still wish to participate in the Walkabout, please email tom@theeastcut.org.

11:00am – 2:00pm Block Party Open to All
Arrive at Beale Street Midblock Park (between LUMINA and the Bay Area Metro Center) for a family-friendly community gathering set in a new, signature public open space. The Block Party will be a much-needed opportunity for neighbors to gather on the weekend, enjoy our public spaces and build community.

You can expect to find unique food, drinks, activities, speakers, and entertainment to include:

  • Pop-up outdoor cafe serving a variety of brunch items
  • Craft cocktail brunch bar
  • Activities for kids and families including arts and crafts
  • The East Cut Town Square featuring entertainment, information, and talks with neighbors, City partners, and more.

About Downtown Streets Team

Homelessness in San Francisco has become an overwhelming public health and community challenge. It is increasingly referred to as a crisis by residents, visitors, and the people living on the streets and in shelters. According to the 2015 Point in Time Count the total number of sheltered and unsheltered individuals in San Francisco increased by 7% to 7,539. A recent poll by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce states that homelessness is the number one concern among the city’s residents.

With your support, Downtown Streets Team (DST) hopes to address this crisis with an empowering, and sustainable community solution. Launched in San Francisco at the end of March 2016, DST has already made an impact. The SF team launch was the fastest in DST history, capping out at 24 Team Members in only two weeks.

In a little more than three months, DST successfully found 12 people employment and the team removed over 75,000 gallons of debris from the city’s streets, as well as 2,921 used needles. DST is currently beautifying the areas of Civic Center, UN Plaza, and Union Square. Now, The East Cut CBD will launch a team of 4 DST working in the district each weekday morning. Please help us support a program that will improve the district’s cleanliness and beauty and help individuals living on the streets move closer to permanent housing and employment.
