Please join The East Cut Community Benefit District, Bay Area artists, and DJs in launching our pop-up arts and culture series, ‘Third Fridays.’ Taking place on October 20th and curated by local art collective Beyond Beyond, ‘Third Fridays’ will promote the San Francisco and Bay Area art scene with participants keeping 100% of the proceeds of all sales associated with the event series. “Squeeze / Brush / Poke / Caress,” a group show focusing how on touch employs inventive use of materials that invites physical engagement with their work. These artists interrogate touch as a rich idiom for sense-making and reaffirm the rewards of viewing as a full-bodied experience. Curated by Ben Stark, Will Lockwood and Bre Arder.

Alyssa Lempesis received an MFA from University of California at Davis (2014) and a BA at University of California at Berkeley (2012). She is an artist and educator living and working in the East Bay. Recent solo exhibitions include Aggregate Space (Oakland), Diablo Valley College (Pleasant Hill), The Building Imagination Center at CSU Stanislaus (Turlock) and Alter Space Gallery (SF) as part of the Jail Cell Residency Program. In addition, Lempesis has participated in group shows at The Lab (SF), Root Division (SF), Pro Arts Gallery (Oakland), and Gregory Kondos Gallery at Sacramento City College (Sacramento).

Matt Goldberg is an artist and educator working in San Francisco. His work is primarily sculptural and stems from a background in ceramics as well as reclaimed objects and materials. Matt received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Colorado. His work has been shown around the Bay Area and he has participated in residencies at Recology and the Palo Alto Art Center. Matt currently runs the ceramic programming at SOMArts Cultural Center.

Alise Anderson was born in Houston, Texas. From 2007 to 2009 she studied Modern Dance Performance and Choreography at Utah Valley University. Later receiving a certificate in Directing and Producing at Berkeley Digital Film Institute. Her work has already been included in various exhibitions and screenings including West Coast Craft, San Francisco CA and Selected Shorts at Pacific Film Archive. This year her work will be showcased in KnitWit Magazine and Kole Magazine, both fiber and textile publications. This past summer she attended an artist residency at CalArts. Anderson currently lives and works in Oakland.

Ryan Rudie is a self taught artist living in Oakland, California. The creation of ceramic vessels led to a fascination in both form and process in clay. This admiration continues and is represented through wood. His need to recreate forms of his past led to the discovery of wood butchery. Wood butchery is what leads to the creation of forms held together through tension. Tension being the energy that sustains the vessel which represents the body His current work utilizes salvaged 2 x 4’s that are cut to size then placed through wire forms. Forms are then preserved in polyurethane and wire is removed.

Kerri Conlon (b. 1987 in Laconia, NH) is a sculptor living and working in San Francisco. Conlon is presently enrolled in Yale University’s School of Art: Sculpture MFA program (2019), and received her BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design (2009). She has participated in exhibitions at The Wurks, Providence; 100%, San Francisco; Bass and Reiner, San Francisco; and Root Division, San Francisco. In 2016 Conlon was a Scholarship Attendee at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, CO, and she has lectured at art spaces such as The Wurks in Providence. Professionally Conlon is the Co-Founder at Hunt Projects (established 2012), an art and design studio space with shared wood and metal shops.

Tana Quincy Arcega’s work re-examines the use of utilitarian materials from the vantage point of a painter. Her unconventional approach is as much about acquiring new forms of media and reinventing process as it is about composition and mark-making. Her paintings explore the dialogue between substrate and surface. Tana has a BFA from the University of Nebraska and and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She has had several solo exhibitions at venues including the Foundry Art Center and Bemis Underground and has shown locally at CounterPulse, Root Division, and Adobe Books Backroom Gallery amongst others. Her mouth paintings were featured in Her Living magazine. Tana has also worked as a children’s book illustrator, muralist, and educator. She currently teaches in the Public Education Department at SFAI and works out of her studio in the Mission.
