The Mayor’s proposed navigation center at Seawall Lot 330 has made homelessness and the welfare of unsheltered San Franciscans top-of-mind for many of us in the East Cut area. The proposal has generated the largest amount of community engagement of any project we’ve ever seen – on both sides of the issue. And with all the talk online, at community meetings, and in person, The East Cut CBD offers our knowledge and experience of the district and the homeless neighbors living on our sidewalks.
Every morning at 4:00am our ambassadors survey the whole district to prepare for morning conversations and support contacts with those sleeping on the streets. Over the last several months, your East Cut team has seen an average of fifteen (15) individuals, and a range of 9 to 16. Certainly, there are more individuals living unhoused outside the district and along the Embarcadero.
While there is no question that more navigation centers are needed – across the city – it is reasonable to question the scale of the one proposed on the Embarcadero. We urge everyone to attend any of the upcoming community meetings, follow The East Cut on social media (Facebook and Twitter) to stay informed on next meetings.
